Plastic Clay Stage of Abstract Clay Tile
Bone Dry Stage of Abstract Clay Tile
Artist Statement: I have created a 5 by 5 tile. On the tile I used more than five different types of coils. The different types of coils made my piece very abstract. It has braids, swirls, long coils, short coils, clay balls, and little clay dots. During this process, I used many elements of design, including form, shape, and space. I tried to use all the space on the slab by including many 3-D clay forms and shapes. It was a hard process of committing to decisions and deciding which coils go in which spaces. When creating this I didn't have any cultural purpose, meaning, or function. I just decided that it would look pretty against the wall of my house. I think I was thinking more about what type of design my mom would want. My mom loves art, even though she's not an artist, she's all about decorating our house. I think it was definitely successful, although I could've been a little more better at smoothing the edges out and making it neater. During the process I thought about re-doing it many times, but I'm glad I chose to continue it. It turned out as one of my best pieces in all of my art career, which only includes school art classes.
